Robotic Process Automation

Robotic Process Automation also known as RPA is a process that is based on robotic tools and artificial intelligence. Robotic automation includes a wide range of technologies that are used for monitoring and controlling the entire process with the help of software trained robots. The functions or process is performed with minimal human involvement. Automation has a wide range of applications not only in large scale industries, but also at household level. At household level RPA is used in vacuum cleaners, automated lights, home security, controlled garage access, etc. In industries, RPA is used self-driving cars and other electronic navigation systems.

Robotic Process Automation may access data from old systems and work effectively with other applications using frontend connectors. As a result, the automation platform can carry out common operations like authenticating, copying and pasting the information between systems like a manual worker would. RPA acts like an automated workstation which is centrally controlled. The entire system is connected electronically and is largely responsible for the scalability of contemporary solutions.

Robotic Process Automation tools work using artificial intelligence. A software program is trained in way that a given specific set of actions is performed by the machine. RPA consists of API integration which helps in easy connection to other services and systems. In the sense that new software platforms are developing that are sufficiently developed, robust, scalable, and dependable to make this technique practical for usage in major companies, it is seen to represent a significant technical advance.

Advantages of RPA

1. Easy to do:

Since the entire process is automated, the amount of manual work needed to be done is reduced. Anyone with a basic knowledge and understanding of concepts can learn and do the work without prior experience.

2. Costs savings:

The process is automated and hence the requirement of work force or the workers for doing the job is less or sometimes workers are not even required. This acts as a benefit to the company in cost savings. The wages to be given to more numbers of workers get eliminated.

4. Customer satisfaction:

Customer satisfaction is one of the crucial points to retain a company’s customers. But due to long response time from customer care services, customers tend to move towards a company which provides better customer services. Since bots and chatbots are available 24/7, they can shorten client wait times, increasing customer satisfaction.

5. Healthy work environment:

Due to Robotic Process Automation, the staff need not do the entire work manually. Instead, timelines are set for the automation processes that gets completed within the programmed timeline which is pre-set. This encourages a healthy environment among workers.

6. Better efficiency:

RPA robots are programmed to follow precise procedures, which helps to eliminate human error. Robotic Process automation provides improved speed, accuracy, and consistency in the process.

7. Existing systems in use:

Robotic process automation software doesn’t interfere with underlying systems. It works only at the lower levels of machine. Hence in case of installation of new machinery, the APIs can be set using similar set of instructions. This enhances the productivity of the existing system in use.

Drawbacks of Robotic Process Automation
  1. Hardware systems and components in automation industries vary according to their operational usage. Hence it is not possible to design such ideal component that would fit into more than one existing systems.
  2. Time taken to train a heavy machine is more due to varying process rules.
Applications

RPA technology is used by a variety of sectors to simplify business processes. There are RPA deployments in the following sectors:

Finance:

Nowadays, banks all over the world use RPA automation solutions to systematize tasks. These tasks might include fraud handling, money laundering case, account activation/ deactivation, customer details, linking and verifying documents of customers. Since the amount of data stored in bank’s server is huge, automation is used to verify the customer data. The process of automation consists of a set of instructions using which the system is already programmed.

Retail:

Robotic Process Automation also plays an important role in the retail sector. This includes keeping a track of new users, existing users and their purchases. This also involves customer satisfaction as customer feedback helps to improve the system in a progressive manner. Other areas of retail where RPA is used are warehouse management, fraud detection, money laundering and keeping a track of all the transactions made by the customer.

Healthcare:

Healthcare sector is another huge sector which uses Robotic Process Automation tools. In the health care sector, accuracy and compliance are very important and have to be monitored regularly. Some of the biggest hospitals in the world employ robotic process automation software to execute variety of tasks such as treating a patient, keeping a track of medical history of the patient, claiming medical insurances, prescription tracking and many other tasks related to health.
